The Multiplayer Group / 2023 – 2025
During my time working on this unannounced Unreal Engine 5 project at The Multiplayer Group, I was responsible for UI Direction on the project, including UX Design, Art Direction of graphic design elements within the UI, Implementation of UI widgets in UMG, Motion graphics during game flow, and the design and implementation of connective sequences and other elements that support the UI (e.g. the virtual space in the front end).
I had the fortune to Lead an incredible UI Art team (Josie Baughan and Doug Loscalzo), as well as work under two amazing art directors (James Roadley-Battin, and then John Kelly), who collaborated on a vibrant, retro-futuristic UI Art style which aimed to communicate science fiction visual motifs in an all ages appropriate graphic design style. Our UI emulated an intergalactic OS, that in-universe characters would use to sign up and join in the minigames that players engage in. We were influenced by a wide range of inspirations, from Designer’s Republic, to Star Trek, to Kid’s Television Channels such as Disney XD and Nickelodeon.
Our aim was to create a friendly, exciting UI that spoke to younger players with bold colours, streamlined information and rounded shapes, whilst retaining an attitude that would appeal to older players with glitchy transition animations, streetwear inspired icons, and elegant decorative elements.
